Starting a Newsletter

Over the last 6 months, we’ve grown this newsletter from 0 to over 3,500 subscribers.

It’s taken blood, sweat and tears but we no longer need social media to grow our coaching business.

Let me explain…

The average reach of a post on Instagram is 12% (Hootsuite). And our open rate on this bad boy is pushing 40%.

So that means whenever we post something on Instagram, 321 people will see it. But when we send out a newsletter, ~1,400 of you guys see it.

So how can you start a newsletter and grow your coaching business?

The good news is that you really don’t need to spend a heap of time with a weekly newsletter.

But you have to make it useful. So scrap the 15,000 word essays and only hit publish on the content your audience actually look forward to opening each week.

When you have a system dialled in (read the Content Workflow issue), it becomes smooth sailing. Let’s dive in.

Step 1 - Deliver live training for your clients (30 mins)

Choose a topic from the coaching roadmap and structure a live session with your clients, walking them through how to implement it. This can happen in a Facebook Group, on Zoom… wherever.

Step 2 - Repurpose into x3 posts (10 mins)

Use our templates in Content Operating System to quickly write your Authority, Social Proof and 2-Step posts (using the live training as a guide)

Step 3 - Structure these posts into a newsletter (20 mins)

Take these posts and copy them into Beehiiv, adding small tweaks to make sense for a newsletter format.

Step 4 - Schedule the newsletter first & signal value on social media (5 mins)

Once you’re happy, schedule the newsletter to go out at the same time and day each week. Post a teaser on your stories to push people to subscribe.

Every Saturday night, we post something like this on our stories and we usually get new subscribers.

Step 5 - Distribute each of your x3 posts the following week (5 mins)

Schedule the authority, social proof and 2-steps posts to go out individually on your social media the week after. Use these posts to push people back to the newsletter to subscribe.

Another advantage of a newsletter is that you can launch offers on the down-low. So far, only our email subscribers are aware of Trainer Crew, a membership platform we created a month ago. We’re now up to 27 members just from 1 email (love you guys). Pretty cool, right?

When you own a newsletter, you own the audience. You don’t need to rely on “the algorithm” or fall mercy to the neverending content treadmill.

You do however, have to put in the reps. Building any kind of audience is hard. We’d just rather focus on the channel where we control distribution.

To combine your newsletter with great design, we’ve created a style sheet you can grab below.

When promoting your newsletter on social media, it’s important you don’t just say “Sign up to my newsletter”. There’s no value packed into that statement and you’ll be lucky to get subscribers. Instead, position your newsletter as something tangible and valuable to your audience. Use this template to help you.

That's a wrap for today. Stay sweaty & see ya next week! If you want more, be sure to follow our Instagram (@themediabros)
